Muharram 2025:
What is Muharram?
Muharram (Arabic: المُحَرَّم) literally means "forbidden" and is considered one of the holiest months in Islam. It is a time of reflection, mourning, and renewal for Muslims. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, is especially significant due to the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
Significance of Ashura
- On the 10th of Muharram, Imam Hussain ibn Ali, along with his family and followers, was martyred in Karbala (present-day Iraq) by the army of Yazid.
- This event symbolizes the struggle against tyranny and injustice.
- For Shia Muslims, it is a day of intense mourning. They observe majlis (gatherings), reenact the battle, and participate in processions to honor the sacrifice of Imam Hussain.
- Sunni Muslims also fast on this day, as Prophet Muhammad recommended fasting on Ashura to commemorate the day when Prophet Musa (Moses) and his people were saved from Pharaoh.
How is Muharram Observed?
For Shia Muslims:
- Majlis and Matam: Religious gatherings are held where the tragedy of Karbala is narrated. Mourners beat their chests (matam) in sorrow.
- Tazia Processions: Symbolic representations of Imam Hussain’s tomb are carried through the streets.
- Black Clothing: Mourners wear black and avoid celebrations during this period.
For Sunni Muslims:
- Fasting on 9th and 10th: Fasting on the 9th and 10th (or 10th and 11th) of Muharram is a Sunnah (practice) of Prophet Muhammad.
- Charity and Prayer: Acts of kindness, prayer, and spiritual reflection are emphasized.
