eriatric Medicine within the next two years. The move is aimed at addressing the specialized medical needs of elderly patients and enhancing healthcare education in the eastern region of India.

High-Level Committee to Develop Curriculum

College President Malay Pit made the announcement during the inauguration of ‘Shushrusha’, a special humanitarian initiative by the institution. He revealed that a t

en-member committee headed by former Principal Prof. Dr. Gautam Narayan Sarkar will be formed to design the curriculum, complete necessary formalities, and submit proposals to the National Medical Council for approval.

Special Focus on Elderly Healthcare

Speaking about the need for such a course, Malay Pit said, “Medical treatment for elderly citizens is a completely separate field requiring specialized knowledge. Therefore, we have decided to start a postgraduate degree course in Geriatric Medicine within the next two years.”

Geriatric Medicine focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of age-related health issues, ensuring not only the cure of diseases but also the overall well-being and quality of life for senior citizens.

‘Shushrusha’ — A 100-Bed Humanitarian Ward

The announcement was made during the Independence Day morning inauguration of ‘Shushrusha’, a 100-bed ward designed to provide high-quality medical care at a very low cost for critically ill patients from financially disadvantaged families.

The event was attended by Principal Prof. Dr. S.P. Mitra, former Principal Prof. Dr. Gautam Narayan Sarkar, Academic Coordinator Dr. Ayan Goswami, senior doctors, staff, and students.

College officials said this initiative aims to ensure that no one is denied medical treatment in their last days due to financial constraints. “The right to healthcare is an essential part of freedom,” an official noted, emphasizing the humanitarian significance of the project.

Significance of the New Course

Currently, in India, a postgraduate diploma in Geriatric Medicine is available only through IGNOU, and MD-level courses are offered by very few institutions, including Madras Medical College, Christian Medical College (Vellore), and AIIMS.

The launch of this course at Santiniketan Medical College & Hospital will benefit both senior citizens and MBBS graduates seeking specialization, marking an important milestone for medical education in the region.
