On Monday, September 1, West Bengal Labour Minister Moloy Ghatak announced the launch of the ‘Shramashree Portal’ at Nabanna. The initiative comes under the direction of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to support migrant workers returning to Bengal after facing atrocities in BJP-ruled states.

Offline Applications Already Started

The Labour Minister informed that offline applications had begun on August 21, and over 20,000 applications have already been registered. These applications will now be uploaded to the new portal in phases. Workers who applied offline will not face any inconvenience. Through the portal, workers will be able to apply online and also track the progress of their applications easily.

Atrocities on Migrant Workers in BJP-Ruled States

Minister Moloy Ghatak alleged that in several BJP-ruled states such as Assam, Maharashtra, Odisha, Haryana, and Rajasthan, Bengali migrant workers are being attacked, threatened, and harassed by the police. Many workers are reportedly branded as “Bangladeshi” simply for speaking in Bengali. In some cases, complaints are filed against them, while others face forced pushbacks or detention camps.
As a result, thousands of workers have been compelled to return to West Bengal, facing financial instability and unemployment.

Introduction of the ‘Shramashree Scheme’

To address this crisis, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched the ‘Shramashree Scheme’. Under this scheme, unemployed migrant workers who register will receive financial assistance of ₹5,000 per month for one year.

Objectives of the Scheme

The government’s goal is to ensure that migrant workers can live and work with dignity after returning to Bengal. The portal will serve as a centralized database of workers’ information, enabling the government to provide:

  • Valid identification
  • Health protection
  • Insurance coverage
  • Education
  • Access to other welfare schemes

Awareness at the Grassroots Level

The Labour Department has announced that awareness camps will be organized at district, block, and gram panchayat levels to encourage workers to register quickly with the necessary documents.

Political Significance

Political observers believe the move highlights the plight of migrant workers in BJP-ruled states while strengthening the TMC government’s support base in Bengal. The scheme not only provides financial security but also delivers a political message against BJP-led states.

A Major Step for Migrant Workers

With the launch of the Shramashree Portal, the West Bengal government has taken a significant step for the welfare of migrant workers. The Labour Department expects that in the coming days, lakhs of workers will benefit under this scheme.
