The term "Paramedical has long been used to describe various healthcare related professions that provide support services in healthcare delivery. However, with the enactment of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021, the term "Allied and Healthcare has been formally adopted to define, standardize, and recognize these professions under a unified framework.
Paramedical Term Cancel:
In a landmark announcement, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP), has officially discontinued the use of the term "Paramedical" across all government, academic, and training sectors. From 1st July 2025, all references must shift to the term “Allied and Healthcare”.
Why the Term "Paramedical" is Removed?
As per the NCAHP Act 2021, the term "Allied and Healthcare" now legally replaces the older, loosely defined "Paramedical" term. The move is aimed to:
- Standardize healthcare training nomenclature in India
- Avoid confusion in academic and professional identity
- Align with global healthcare education standards
New Guidelines as per the NCAHP Circular 2025
- All state governments, universities, and institutions are directed to stop using "paramedical" in:
- Prospectuses
- Websites
- Advertisements
- Certificates
- Communication documents
- Prospectuses
- The term "Allied and Healthcare" must be used instead across all official records and digital platforms.
As per the Official Notification, the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) announce that:
1. The term "Paramedical has long been used to describe various healthcare related professions that provide support services in healthcare delivery. However, with the enactment of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021, the term "Allied and Healthcare has been formally adopted to define, standardize, and recognize these professions under a unified framework.
In view of the above and for the purpose of ensuring uniformity, standard terminology and alignment with the provisions of the NCAIIP Act, 2021, it is recommended by the Commission to implement the followings:
a) All State Governments, Union Territories and relevant Universities/Institutions are recommended to discontinue the use of the term "Paramedical in all official correspondence, communications, policies, advertisements, training programmes, institutional titles, recruitment notifications, educational materials and any other Government-related documents or portals.
b) The term "Allied and Healthcare" as defined under Section 2 (b), (c), (d), (e) and (j) of the NCAHP Act, 2021 shall be used henceforth in place of "Paramedical" in all forms of usage (verbal, written or electronic).
c) The Health Departments of the States/UT's are requested to communicate this to all concerned authorities, institutions and stakeholders under their jurisdiction and ensure necessary compliance at the earliest.
3. This is issued with the approval of the Competent Authority.
How Will This Affect Students & Healthcare Aspirants?
- Paramedical Courses 2025 will now be officially known as Allied and Healthcare Courses.
- Institutes must revise program names like Paramedical Diploma to Allied Health Diploma.
- Students applying for healthcare scholarships or jobs must now refer to themselves as part of the "Allied and Healthcare" profession.
